Medicolegal

Consultant Gynaecologist with 27 years of experience, appointed to Barts and the Royal London Trust in 1995. I am in active current practice, seeing 250 new patients and performing 150 operative procedures per annum in the independent sector. I was one of the early pioneers of minimal access surgery for gynaecology in the UK, running post-graduate training courses and serving on the MAS Training sub-committees at the RCOG and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2002.

I was the first subspecialist trainee in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Barts and the Royal London Trust in 1993. I designed and commissioned a stand-alone fertility clinic in Colchester. I currently work as a satellite centre for two IVF clinics in the UK and two in the United States. I have a detailed knowledge of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (Amended 2008) and its implications in clinical practice.

I have particular expertise in the treatment of Asherman’s syndrome, uterine fibroids, post-surgical adhesions and complex fertility problems. I have contributed over 30 original research papers published in peer-reviewed journals and have been asked to contribute chapters in a number of textbooks on gynaecological surgery, reproductive medicine and medicolegal issues in gynaecology.

Medicolegal Experience:

I have provided medicolegal reports for more than 15 years producing in excess of 75 reports during this time, of which around 25% have been for the defendant and 75% for the claimant. I comply with the Civil Procedure Rules 1998 (Revised 2009) and have undergone training in the principles of the test cases of Bolam, modified by Bolitho, Bailey, Hunter and Montgomery.

I have given presentations on gynaecological procedures to clinical negligence lawyers on courses at 9 Gough Square, The Law Society and the Professional Negligence Bar Association.

• Courtroom skills

Member of the Expert Witness Institute:

I am a member of the Expert Witness Institute.

Post Graduate training and experience:

Currently, I work in active private practice focusing on benign gynaecology, uterine fibroids, reproductive medicine and surgery and assisted conception. I was the clinical lead for fertility at Barts and the Royal London Trust and I successfully tendered for a NHS fertility contract for the whole of Norfolk, establishing a satellite clinic for Barts in Norwich. I was co-author of an early textbook of Gynaecological Endoscopy and ran a successful series of courses between Barts and an animal lab in France in the early 1990’s at which we trained more than 70 UK consultants in laparoscopic hysterectomy. I served on the board of the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy. I established an early interest in treating Asherman’s syndrome (intrauterine adhesions) and am one of only 2 recommended surgeons in the UK regularly operating on patients with this condition.

I am widely published with over 30 research papers in peer reviewed journals and I have contributed to a number of major textbooks of Gynaecological and General Surgery. I have been invited to speak at numerous international scientific meetings on my areas of research over the last 30 years.
